UP, 4014 - our "Big Boy Steam Heritage Edition"
25 units of the giant "Big Boys" were built for the Union Pacific Railroad and ran regularly between Ogden, Utah and Cheyenne, Wyo. Big Boy No. 4014 was delivered to the Union Pacific in December 1941 and retired from service exactly 20 years later, having travelled 1,659,564 km in its 20 years of service.
Union Pacific acquired No. 4014 from the RailGiants Museum in Pomona, California, in 2013 and moved back to Cheyenne to begin a multi-year restoration process. It was returned to service in May 2019 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railway.
Rivarossi's new 2022 model features a new fuel oil tender (the royal tender was originally included in the UP "Challenger" 3985), a modified furnace, new radio antennas and other new details to best reflect its 87-unit counterpart.

Why is it called "Big Boy"?
Of all the articulated locomotives, the 4-8-8-4 was the "biggest" in terms of size, weight, power and speed.
Hence the name "Big Boy", which aptly summarises all these qualities. It seems that the name comes from a chalk inscription on the door of the smoke chamber of the prototype 4000, made by an ALCO worker.
The Big Boy can reach a speed of 80 miles per hour and its maximum power of more than 7000 hp develops at a speed of 30 mph.
With an impressive length of 475 mm (almost 19 inches), this model has a 5-pole motor and brass flywheel, a 21-pole connection for DCC decoders, steel wire handrails and much more.
This locomotive stands out from all the others and is undoubtedly a pure classic.
